November 20, Trans Day of Remembrance, is a political and community act to honor Trans lives and denounce prejudice-based violence that leads to the physical and symbolic annihilation of Trans people. For 14 years, Fundación GAAT, Grupo de Acción y Apoyo a Personas Trans, has documented these acts of violence, demanded state recognition, supported chosen and blood families, and built collective memory as a means of healing.
The installation was composed of three main elements:
Memorial Plaques
A growing archive of names, faces, and stories of Trans people who were killed or died because of barriers to their basic rights, confronting the public with the scale of Trans mortality in Colombia.
Textile Installation
A textile space of encounter and support, installed at the heart of legislative power, honoring those lost while celebrating Trans forms of life. The colors of the installation correspond to the Integral Trans Law Project in Colombia.
Living Memorial Sculpture
A collective memorial created with participants from GAAT's support groups, honoring intergenerational bonds and affective ties between Trans people. The inverted faces invite us to recognize those who came before and open a path for those who will come.
